By Emmanuel Kwada

Spanish football has been thrown into mourning following the death of footballer Jesús de Miguel after a violent collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a second-division match on Monday.

De Miguel, who played for CD Tenerife, collided with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in the closing moments of the encounter while chasing a loose ball around the halfway line.

Owono reportedly rushed out of his goal to clear the ball but collided with the advancing striker at speed, leaving both players involved in the incident.

De Miguel initially fell to the ground, clutching his chest before becoming motionless, prompting immediate concern among players and officials.

Owono was shown a red card and had begun making his way off the pitch when the seriousness of the situation became apparent.

The match was subsequently abandoned as medical personnel rushed to attend to De Miguel before he was transported to hospital for emergency treatment.

Although initial reports indicated that his condition was stable despite the severity of the incident, his health reportedly deteriorated overnight.

CD Tenerife confirmed his death on Tuesday morning, saying his neurological condition had worsened.

There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.

In a deeply emotional statement, Tenerife expressed profound sadness over the loss of the player, saying the tragedy had left the club and its supporters struggling to find words.

“There are no words of comfort. There is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness,” the club said.

The announcement sent shockwaves through the Spanish football community, with tributes pouring in from clubs, supporters and football stakeholders.

FC Andorra also paid tribute to De Miguel in a message shared on X, extending its sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

Meanwhile, Owono reportedly deactivated his Instagram account by Tuesday morning following the incident.

Spanish media reports indicate that the country’s National Police have opened an investigation into De Miguel’s death, with the incident being examined as a possible case of involuntary manslaughter.

The High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands told Spanish newspaper El País that deaths considered non-natural are subject to investigation.

The inquiry is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and the events that followed it.

CNN Sports said it had contacted the Spanish National Police and the High Court of Justice for further comments.

De Miguel’s death has once again highlighted the dangers footballers can face during competitive matches, particularly in high-speed challenges involving players and goalkeepers.

As tributes continue to emerge, the focus remains on his grieving family, teammates and the wider football community mourning a life lost in tragic circumstances.
