By Emmanuel Kwada

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have made history by reaching the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time following an impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil on Wednesday night in Morocco.

The Nigerian girls delivered a remarkable performance to overcome the South Americans in the semi-final, becoming the first African nation to reach the final of the competition.

Queen Joseph opened the scoring for Nigeria before Awawu Bashiru netted twice to secure a historic victory for Akeem Busari’s side.

Joseph gave Nigeria the lead with a close-range finish, slotting the ball home from four yards to put the Flamingos in control.

Bashiru extended the advantage with a superb effort, as her lofted cross sailed over the Brazilian goalkeeper and found the back of the net.

The forward completed her brace with a well-placed finish at the near post, sending Nigerian supporters and officials into celebrations.

Brazil managed to pull one goal back through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but it was too late to prevent Nigeria from securing a memorable victory.

The result marks Nigeria’s first-ever victory over Brazil at the U-17 Women’s World Cup and guarantees the Flamingos a place in the tournament’s final.

It also represents a major milestone for African women’s football, as Nigeria becomes the first country from the continent to reach the final of the competition.

The Flamingos will now face Japan, who defeated tournament favourites Korea DPR in the other semi-final, in Saturday’s final scheduled for November 7.

Nigeria will be aiming to make further history by winning their first-ever U-17 Women’s World Cup title, having previously secured bronze medals in 2022.

The victory over Brazil has also strengthened hopes that the young Nigerian side can finish their remarkable campaign by lifting the trophy in Morocco.
