Lionesses Shock Nigeria, End Falcons’ WAFCON Title Defence in 1-0 Defeat

Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina was overcome with emotion after producing a stunning performance to help the Indomitable Lionesses eliminate defending champions Nigeria from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Bihina was named Player of the Match after making nine crucial saves and keeping a clean sheet as Cameroon secured a historic 1–0 victory over the Super Falcons in their quarter-final clash at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday.

The victory sent Cameroon into the WAFCON semi-finals and secured the country one of Africa’s four qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

For Bihina, the significance of the night appeared to overwhelm her as she broke down in tears while receiving the individual award.

Her emotional reaction captured the magnitude of a victory that had seemed increasingly difficult to secure as Nigeria mounted sustained pressure in search of an equaliser.

Cameroon took the lead in the 19th minute through Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen, who found the breakthrough that ultimately decided the fiercely contested encounter.

The goal forced Nigeria to chase the game, and the Super Falcons responded by increasing the pressure as the first half progressed.

Nigeria created opportunities and dominated significant portions of the latter stages of the opening period, but Cameroon’s defence remained disciplined.

After the restart, the Falcons continued their search for an equaliser, pushing forward and testing the Cameroonian defence.

But each time Nigeria threatened, Bihina stood between the defending champions and the goal they desperately needed.

One of her most important interventions came in the second half when she produced a crucial close-range save to deny Nigeria a potential equaliser.

By the final whistle, she had completed the night with nine saves and a clean sheet.

A night of heartbreak for Nigeria

The final whistle triggered contrasting emotions.

While Cameroon celebrated a place in the last four and a return to the Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s players were left to contemplate one of the most painful defeats in the history of their participation in the competition.

The Super Falcons entered the tournament as defending champions and had been among the favourites to retain their continental crown.

Instead, their 1–0 defeat means Nigeria have failed to reach the WAFCON semi-finals for the first time in the history of the centralised tournament.

The result also ended the Falcons’ bid to defend their title and denied them an automatic qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The four WAFCON semi-finalists earn Africa’s automatic tickets to the global tournament.

Cameroon have now claimed one of those coveted places.

The result represents a significant moment in the long-running rivalry between the two nations.

But this time, Cameroon produced the defensive resilience needed to frustrate the champions.

Bihina’s performance proved particularly decisive.

Cameroon face Morocco in semi-final

Cameroon’s reward for eliminating Nigeria is a semi-final meeting with hosts Morocco.

Morocco secured their place in the last four after defeating South Africa 2–1 in their own quarter-final encounter.

The Indomitable Lionesses will now turn their attention to the semi-final, where another victory would take them to the final and bring them closer to their first WAFCON title since 2016.

For Nigeria, however, the road ends at the quarter-final stage.

The Super Falcons will now have to regroup after a tournament-ending defeat that has brought an abrupt end to their title defence and, for the first time in the centralised WAFCON era, left the nine-time African champions outside the continent’s final four.

As Cameroon celebrated, one image stood out above the rest — Bihina, tears streaming down her face, holding the Player of the Match award after a night in which she had stood firm against one of Africa’s most decorated women’s football teams.

It was, quite simply, a night to remember for Cameroon and a night of heartbreak for Nigeria.
