Super Falcons Crush Egypt 6-2 to Storm WAFCON Quarter-Finals, Set Up Cameroon Showdown

Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a stunning attacking masterclass on Wednesday night, thrashing Egypt 6-2 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The emphatic Group C victory at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat ensured the defending champions advanced as runners-up, keeping alive their quest for a record-extending 11th continental title. Nigeria will now face regional rivals Cameroon in what promises to be a blockbuster quarter-final encounter.

The Super Falcons entered the decisive fixture under pressure after suffering a shock opening defeat to tournament debutants Malawi before reviving their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Zambia.

Against an already-eliminated Egyptian side, Coach Justine Madugu’s team responded with one of their most convincing performances of the tournament.

Oshoala Opens the Floodgates

Nigeria took the lead in the 21st minute after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded a penalty for a handball inside Egypt’s penalty area. Veteran striker Asisat Oshoala calmly converted from the spot, sending the Egyptian goalkeeper the wrong way to hand the Falcons a deserved advantage.

The nine-time African champions continued to dominate possession and create opportunities, with Rinsola Babajide proving a constant threat on the left flank.

Nigeria dominated the contest from start to finish, enjoying approximately 59 per cent possession and registering about 25 shots compared to Egypt’s five.

Their persistence paid off deep into first-half stoppage time when Babajide delivered a pinpoint pass for Gift Monday, who finished confidently in the 45+2nd minute to double Nigeria’s lead.

However, Egypt pulled one back moments before the interval after another VAR review resulted in a penalty. Nadine Ghazi converted in the 45+10th minute, reducing the deficit and giving the North Africans a glimmer of hope as the teams headed into the break with Nigeria leading 2-1.

The second half belonged entirely to Nigeria.

Just 12 minutes after the restart, substitute Uchenna Kanu extended the lead, meeting another well-weighted delivery from Babajide before calmly finishing to make it 3-1 in the 57th minute.

Nigeria maintained relentless pressure, pinning Egypt deep inside their own half while creating chance after chance.

The Super Falcons were rewarded again in the 81st minute when Christy Ucheibe converted Nigeria’s second penalty of the evening after yet another VAR intervention.

Although Ghazi grabbed her second goal of the night for Egypt in the 84th minute, finishing from Yasmin Hassanin’s assist, Nigeria quickly restored their commanding advantage.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted the Super Falcons’ third penalty in first-half added time after another VAR review, making it 5-2.

There was still time for one more goal as Ajibade turned provider, setting up substitute Joy Omewa, who fired home in the ninth minute of stoppage time to complete an emphatic 6-2 victory.

Rinsola Babajide emerged as one of the game’s standout performers, providing two assists and tormenting Egypt’s defence throughout the encounter. Her outstanding display earned widespread recognition, with several reports naming her Woman of the Match.

Coach Justine Madugu’s tactical changes also proved decisive, as substitutes Gift Monday, Uchenna Kanu and Joy Omewa all found the back of the net, highlighting the squad’s attacking depth.

The victory concluded a dramatic Group C campaign in which Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia all finished on six points.

Egypt ended the tournament bottom of the group without a point, having conceded 15 goals across three matches.

Eyes on an 11th African Crown

The comprehensive victory has restored confidence within the Nigerian camp after their disappointing start to the tournament.

With momentum firmly on their side and their attack finally firing on all cylinders, the Super Falcons now shift focus to a highly anticipated quarter-final clash against Cameroon.

As Africa’s most successful women’s national team, Nigeria remains determined to defend its continental crown and capture an unprecedented 11th WAFCON title in Morocco.
