Nigeria has recorded a historic milestone in global athletics as teenage sensation Jessica Oji became the country’s first-ever World U20 field event champion, clinching gold in the women’s shot put at the 2026 World U20 Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States.

The remarkable victory marks a defining moment for Nigerian athletics, ending decades of waiting for a field event gold medal at the prestigious championship and cementing Oji’s place in the nation’s sporting history.

The young athlete delivered a series of outstanding throws to outclass a competitive field, recording distances of 18.05m, 18.08m, 17.95m, and 18.07m. Her best effort of 18.08 metres proved enough to secure the gold medal and write her name into the record books.

Oji’s consistency throughout the competition was one of the highlights of the final, as she maintained elite-level performances across multiple attempts to fend off her challengers and claim Nigeria’s first-ever World U20 title in a field event.

The achievement comes just weeks after the talented shot putter won a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, further underlining her rapid rise as one of Nigeria’s brightest athletics prospects.
