Nigeria Bounce Back From 3-1 Down to Snatch 3-3 Draw Against Russia
By Emmanuel Kwada
Nigeria’s Super Eagles produced a dramatic late comeback on Tuesday, fighting back from a 3-1 deficit to secure a thrilling 3-3 draw against Russia in an entertaining international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod.
The result provided a much-needed response for head coach Éric Chelle and his players following Nigeria’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Super Eagles started brightly and took the lead in the 10th minute when Kelechi Iheanacho found the net with a left-footed strike from outside the box following an assist from Abdullahi Bewene.
Nigeria’s problems deepened nine minutes into the second half when Alexey Miranchuk extended Russia’s advantage to 3-1.
Russia, however, gradually grew into the game and equalised through Lechi Sadulaev in the 30th minute.
The hosts then completed the turnaround shortly before half-time when Matvey Kislyak scored in stoppage time to give Russia a 2-1 lead at the break.

But the Super Eagles refused to surrender.
Chelle’s substitutions injected fresh energy into the Nigerian attack, with Peter Edokpolor reducing the deficit in the 78th minute on his senior international debut.

With Nigeria pushing for an equaliser, the pressure finally paid off deep into stoppage time.
Akor Adams completed the remarkable comeback in the 94th minute, finishing a counter-attack to level the contest at 3-3 and rescue Nigeria from what appeared to be another defeat.
The dramatic equaliser sparked celebrations among the Nigerian players as the Super Eagles secured a share of the spoils in a six-goal thriller.
The match also provided opportunities for several new players, with a number of debutants featuring for Nigeria. Edokpolor particularly impressed by scoring on his senior international debut, while Adams made a decisive contribution from the bench.

For Iheanacho, the opening goal marked a significant return to the international spotlight and strengthened his case for further consideration by Chelle.
Despite the impressive comeback, the three goals conceded will remain a concern for the Super Eagles coaching staff. Nigeria had also conceded three goals in their previous defeat to Guinea-Bissau, highlighting defensive issues that Chelle will need to address ahead of the team’s next competitive fixtures.
However, the resilience shown against Russia offered a positive response. After falling two goals behind, Nigeria maintained its attacking intent and eventually found a way back into the contest.
The 3-3 draw means Chelle avoids consecutive defeats with the Super Eagles and leaves the friendly with valuable information about both established players and newcomers ahead of the next stage of Nigeria’s preparations.
For a team seeking to rebuild confidence, the comeback in Nizhny Novgorod may prove more significant than the final score suggests.

The Super Eagles came back from the brink, but Chelle will know that the fight shown in Russia must now be matched with greater defensive discipline.
