Guinea-Bissau Humble Super Eagles 3-0

Guinea-Bissau handed Nigeria’s Super Eagles a heavy 3-0 defeat on Tuesday in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L encounter at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau.

The hosts took control early, with Franculino Djú opening the scoring in the 15th minute. The forward latched onto Renato Nhaga’s pass inside the box before firing a left-footed effort beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria had opportunities to level the score before the break. Alex Iwobi created a chance for Ademola Lookman, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Embadjé produced an important save to preserve his side’s advantage.

Guinea-Bissau continued to apply pressure after the restart and doubled their lead in the 65th minute through Mama Baldé.

Baldé collected a pass from Mamadi Camará on the left before sending a low shot into the Nigerian net.

Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle made changes in an effort to change the course of the game, bringing on George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika for Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi in the 75th minute.

The defeat moves Nigeria behind Guinea-Bissau in the Group L standings.

Nigeria, however, struggled to break down the hosts’ defence.

Ilenikhena came close to reducing the deficit in the 85th minute, but Embadjé again stood firm, making another crucial save to deny the Nigerian forward.

Guinea-Bissau then completed the rout in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló received a through ball from Tamble Monteiro and calmly finished with his right foot.

The defeat moves Nigeria behind Guinea-Bissau in the Group L standings. Before Tuesday’s fixtures, both sides had three points from their opening matches, but Guinea-Bissau held the advantage on goal difference.

Following the 3-0 result, Guinea-Bissau move to six points, while Nigeria remain on three points. Madagascar and Tanzania were also scheduled to meet on Tuesday in the other Group L fixture.

Importantly, because Tanzania are co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON and have already qualified automatically, only the highest-placed team among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar will qualify from Group L.

Nigeria’s next listed fixture is a friendly against Russia on October 6, 2026.

For the AFCON qualifying campaign, the next Group L fixtures will be determined by the remaining qualification schedule after the opening two matchdays. CAF’s published schedule confirms that Matchdays 1 and 2 run through October 6, 2026.

The 3-0 loss therefore leaves the Super Eagles with little room for error in their remaining AFCON qualifying matches.
