Tribute to a distinguished gentleman: Late Ambassador Paddy Kemdi Njoku (Omenuko)

By Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN)

With profound gratitude to God for a life exceptionally lived, and with deep sorrow over his passing, we pay tribute to a remarkable man, the late Ambassador Sir (Dr.) Paddy Kemdi Njoku (Omenuko), whose life was a shining example of service, excellence, integrity and unwavering commitment to humanity.

Born on the 28th of August, 1950, Sir Paddy Kemdi Njoku’s existence exemplified immense grace, wisdom, and noble character.

He distinguished himself in every sphere of life and earned the admiration and respect of all who encountered him.

As a diplomat, physician, professional, community leader, and devout Christian, Sir Paddy dedicated his life to the service of God, his family, his community and his nation.

He served as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Examinations Council (NECO), where he distinguished himself not merely as an administrator but as a true servant of the Nigerian child.

Under his leadership, the board carried its mission directly to the people, engaging students, parents, teachers, and even market women in the work of educational reform, an approach so commendable that former President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) himself praised it as the best board he had seen, the first to take its mission to the people in such a manner.

As National Dean of the Association of Ambassadors for Peace and founder of the International Institute of Leadership and Governance (INILAG), Sir Paddy gave years of his life to peace-building, conflict resolution, leadership training, and the promotion of ethics and values across Nigeria.

He believed, with every fibre of his being, that the nation’s salvation lay in the quality of her leadership, and he laboured tirelessly toward that end, often reminding all who would listen, “If leadership does not save Nigeria, leadership will sink Nigeria.”

His numerous titles and honours: KSS, KSJI, FIMC, FCTr, FIL, and MNIM, were never mere decorations. They were reflections of a life marked by diligence, competence, leadership, and outstanding contribution to society.

Through his professional engagements and humanitarian endeavours, he inspired countless individuals and left indelible footprints in the sands of time.

Sir Paddy was a man of uncommon humility despite his accomplishments. He possessed a generous spirit, always willing to lend a helping hand, offer wise counsel, and encourage those around him.

His kindness touched many lives, while his commitment to justice, fairness, and excellence earned him the trust and admiration of colleagues, friends, and associates.

To the young people he mentored, he counselled the virtues of education, humility, patience, courage, and integrity, believing firmly in catching the young while they could still be moulded into great citizens.

Indeed, he will be missed by all. As a Knight of the church, he demonstrated exemplary Christian virtues and remained steadfast in his faith. He served God faithfully and exemplified the ideals of charity, compassion, and selfless service.

His devotion to the church and his dedication to the propagation of Christian values remain a worthy legacy for generations yet to come. Beyond his public achievements, Sir Paddy was a loving husband, caring father, devoted grandfather, dependable friend, and cherished mentor.

His family was the pride of his life, and he nurtured them with love, discipline, and godly principles. His home was a sanctuary of warmth, hospitality, and wisdom.

Though his departure on the 26th of May, 2026, leaves a void that cannot easily be filled, we are comforted by the enduring legacy he leaves behind: A legacy of honour, integrity, faith, service, and love.

His life reminds us that true greatness is measured not by titles acquired but by lives touched and transformed. Today, as we celebrate his remarkable journey on earth, we give thanks for the privilege of knowing him and for the countless memories he leaves in our hearts.

We pray that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family, friends, and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. Farewell, noble ambassador. Farewell, distinguished knight. Farewell, accomplished professional. Farewell, beloved patriarch. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, and your legacy an inspiration.

Omenuko, may your gentle soul rest in the perfect peace you spent a lifetime building for others. Amen.
