‎Defending champions Argentina staged a breathtaking late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026, surviving one of the biggest scares of their title defence in a thrilling Round of 16 clash.

‎The South American giants appeared headed for a shocking exit after Egypt raced into a two-goal lead and even saw goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir deny Lionel Messi from the penalty spot. But a stunning late rally inspired by the Argentine captain turned the contest on its head and kept Argentina’s dream of retaining the World Cup alive.

‎The match also marked another milestone for Lionel Messi, who extended his remarkable scoring streak to nine consecutive World Cup matches despite enduring a difficult first half.

Egypt Dream of Historic Upset

‎Egypt made a fearless start against the reigning world champions and stunned the Argentine supporters when Yasser Ibrahim headed home from a corner in the 15th minute to give the Pharaohs a deserved lead.

‎Argentina struggled to break down Egypt’s disciplined defence, and the shock seemed increasingly likely when Mostafa Zico doubled the lead in the 67th minute after a swift counterattack involving Mohamed Salah and Haissem Hassan.

At 2-0 down, Argentina looked on the verge of elimination.

‎With just over 10 minutes remaining, Argentina finally found a way through. Defender Cristian Romero rose highest to head home a delivery from Messi in the 79th minute, reducing the deficit and breathing life into Argentina’s challenge.

‎Four minutes later, Messi completed his redemption story by firing in the equaliser after a flowing team move, sending Argentine fans into celebration and shifting the momentum completely.

‎The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Enzo Fernández struck in the 92nd minute to complete an extraordinary comeback and seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.
