Senator urges legislators to support establishment ICT institute at Imo varsity

The Senate Committee on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Cyber Security has called for the establihsment of an ICT Centre in Imo Sate University.
The Chairman Committee of ICT and Cyber Security made this appeal at a public hearing sponsored by Senator Chukwuma Frank Ibezim, representing Imo North senatorial district.
The committee further called for the support of the Bill from both the legislature and stakeholders.
According to Senator Oseni, ICT has become extremely important in society and all other socio-economic environments, adding that overemphasis to Digital Technology has become the driver of all aspects of human endeavor.

He said “It is the vehicle casing business and service delivery. It is the pivot for transformation of economies today. In fact, it has become integral to human survival. Accordingly, whether it is in the field of security and intelligence education, banking, health services, manufacturing, aviation, power generation, marine services, building technology, immigration services etc, ICT has become the key infrastructure.”

In his remarks, the sponsor of the bill, Senator Ibezim said 70% of Nigeria’s population were young people, adding that ICT was one of the tools to reduce unemployment in Nigeria.
He further stated that the President Muhammadu Buhari was interested in signing bill, “I can assure you that this bill is signed.”
Senator Ibezim reiterated that The truth is there’s no way you can develop a mission without thinking about it as one of the services in the rural area.

“Agriculture is a mainstay of the economy, the only way to drive economic growth is because even in the agricultural sector, without ICT, you will be able to compete with the world.” He said.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, was represented by the Director of Technical Education and allied institutions, Federal Ministry of Education.

He commended the Senate and said with the population of the country, there was a need for more institutions where youths could learn: “The ministry is not having a different opinion other than to support the Bill.”
A representative of NIGCOMSAT said the bill was to further extend Information and Communication knowledge to the interior of Nigeria, and supported the Bill.
