One Dead, Several Injured in Third Deadly Crash at Karu Bridge, Abuja

Karu Bridge, near the Karu Water Board in Abuja, has once again become a scene of heartbreak as a multiple-vehicle accident claimed one life and left several others injured on Friday. This marks the third devastating crash at the notorious location in just two months.

The accident, which occurred around 2:20 p.m., involved four vehicles, including a cement-laden Dangote truck, and was reported to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Zebra Unit Karu. Sources confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene, evading immediate accountability.

The deceased, identified as the truck’s motor boy, was rushed to Customs Hospital Karu but was pronounced dead on arrival. His identity and address remain unknown. Several occupants of the other vehicles sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical and are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

The collision involved an unregistered Hi-Jet mini truck, a Mercedes Benz CLS350 (RBC 76 MN) driven by Ibrahim Mohammed Aliyu of Karu, a 2017 Ford H (ABC 04 GB) driven by Ademola Odumaki of Lungi Barracks, and a Toyota Corolla (RSH 957 AW) driven by Victor Nwanneka of Karu Extension.

“The truck, loaded with cement, was descending Kugbo hills when it crushed several cars. After crushing about three vehicles and their occupants, it attempted to escape but was intercepted around Karu Roundabout by commercial motorcyclists, Soraj, an okada rider, said.

“I can’t specifically tell how many people were crushed, but it was deadly. I met the crowd at the roundabout where they intercepted the occupants of the vehicles,” Baba Samson, a Nyanya resident, told The Insight.

This latest tragedy follows a grim pattern at Karu Bridge. Just a month ago, a Dangote trailer suffered brake failure, crashing into vehicles in traffic and igniting a fire that burned over 10 people to death and injured more than 50 others.

The very next day, another car accident occurred, resulting in broken bones but no fatalities. Friday’s crash, the third in this short span, has reignited urgent calls for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement on one of Abuja’s deadliest routes.

The FRSC is investigating the cause of the latest accident, with authorities intensifying efforts to apprehend the fugitive truck driver. Residents and commuters are demanding immediate action to prevent further loss of life at Karu Bridge, now a symbol of recurring tragedy.
