Flamingos Defeat Mexico 2-1 to Reach U-17 World Cup Quarter-Finals, Set Up Venezuela Clash

By Emmanuel Kwada

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after defeating Mexico 2-1 in a tense Round of 16 encounter on Thursday.

Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan secured the victory for the Nigerian youngsters, who survived a late Mexican comeback attempt to book their place among the final eight teams in the competition.

The victory marks another important milestone in Nigeria’s impressive campaign, following their remarkable 3-1 triumph over defending champions North Korea in their final group-stage match.

The Flamingos took the lead in the 40th minute when Umejiaku found the back of the net after Esther Stephen’s long delivery created uncertainty in the Mexican defence. The forward capitalised on the opportunity, giving Nigeria a deserved advantage heading into the break.

Nigeria returned for the second half with renewed determination and continued to frustrate their opponents with disciplined defending and purposeful attacking play.

Their efforts paid off in the 71st minute when Mary Dunstan doubled the advantage, putting the Flamingos firmly in control at 2-0.

However, Mexico refused to surrender and increased the pressure as the match approached its closing stages.

The Mexican side eventually found a breakthrough in the 90+10th minute through Emily Delgado, who converted an opportunity created by Camila Campos to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The late goal brought renewed tension to the encounter, particularly as the referee extended stoppage time. Nevertheless, Nigeria maintained their composure and defended their advantage until the final whistle at 90+17 minutes.

Nigeria’s victory was also built on an impressive defensive performance, with goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho playing a crucial role in keeping Mexico at bay.

The towering goalkeeper produced several important saves, including an outstanding intervention to deny Kemberly Garcia’s long-range effort, which she tipped onto the crossbar.

She had earlier prevented Mexico captain Citlalli Reyes from opening the scoring with a timely save in the sixth minute.

Head coach Akeem Busari praised his players for their determination and tactical discipline, acknowledging the pressure associated with knockout-stage football.

Speaking after the match, Busari described the encounter as a difficult contest, noting that the intensity and anxiety surrounding knockout matches often present additional challenges for young players.

He, however, insisted that Nigeria had demonstrated their ability to compete against the best teams in the tournament.

One of the standout performers, Umejiaku, who was named Woman of the Match, expressed happiness with the team’s achievement, attributing their success to unity, encouragement and collective commitment.

She said the strong relationship among the players and the support of their coaches had contributed significantly to their performance.

With Mexico now behind them, Nigeria will turn their attention to Venezuela, who await the Flamingos in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

Venezuela secured their place in the last eight after recording a 1-0 victory over Germany, with Diana Bravo scoring the decisive goal.

The quarter-final outcome will depend on the performances of both teams over the 90 minutes.

The encounter is expected to provide another major test for the Nigerian youngsters as they pursue a place in the semi-finals.

Busari has acknowledged Venezuela’s quality but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete, stressing that every remaining country has a genuine opportunity to win the tournament.

According to the coach, the quarter-final outcome will depend on the performances of both teams over the 90 minutes.

Nigeria will be seeking to reach the semi-finals for the first time since their third-place finish at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

The Flamingos have already recorded three victories in the ongoing competition, equalling their highest number of wins in a single edition of the tournament.
