COREN appoints new Registrar

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria has appointed Prof. Okorie Uche as its new Registrar, effective March 2025.

His appointment was approved at the 183rd Ordinary Council Meeting held on January 15, 2025.

Uche takes over from Prof. Adisa Bello, whose tenure has successfully concluded.

In a statement on Friday issued by Head of Corporate Advancement and Public Relations at COREN, Ojonugwa Haruna, the council expressed confidence in Uche’s leadership, highlighting his vast experience and contributions to engineering education, research, and administration in Nigeria.

“COREN is confident that Engr. Prof. Okorie Austine Uche, FNSE, FNICE, will bring his wealth of knowledge, experience, and leadership to the role of Registrar. His appointment reaffirms COREN’s commitment to excellence in engineering regulation and professional development in Nigeria,” the statement read.

Uche was a Professor of Civil/Structural Engineering at Bayero University, Kano

Before his appointment, Uche was a Professor of Civil/Structural Engineering at Bayero University, Kano, where he served for over two decades, mentoring more than 1,000 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate students.

“His scholarly contributions include over 90 publications in reputable journals and conferences, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in engineering research,” the statement added.

A Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers and a COREN-registered engineer, Uche has also been a member of the American Concrete Institute and the Materials Society of Nigeria.

He has served in various leadership capacities, including as Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers Kano and Kabuga Branches.

The statement added that following his appointment, COREN organized an Orientation Workshop for the incoming and outgoing Registrars, COREN Management, and Regional Officers to ensure a smooth transition and familiarization with the Council’s Vision and Roadmap.

“The Leadership of COREN, in its usual manner, organized an Orientation Workshop for the incoming and outgoing Registrars, members of COREN Management, and Regional Officers, to ensure a seamless transition of power and familiarize the new Registrar with the Vision and Roadmap of the Council,” it added.
