The stage is set for one of the most anticipated FIFA World Cup finals in recent history after Spain and Argentina secured dramatic semi-final victories to book their places in Sunday’s showpiece match in New Jersey.

Spain produced a tactical masterclass to defeat tournament favourites France 2-0 in Arlington, Texas, while defending champions Argentina delivered a devastating late comeback to break English hearts with a 2-1 victory in Atlanta.

Following Gordon’s goal, England reportedly enjoyed only a fraction of possession as Argentina dominated territory and chances.

“Once we went 1-0 up, we seemed to try and hold on. At this level, that’s just not enough,” the England captain admitted.
