Osun governorship election: 500 drummers, others set to drum for violence-free poll

Ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State next month, a unique cultural fiesta aimed at promoting unity and peaceful coexistence among residents will be held in the state.

The epoch-making event is being organised by renowned Yoruba cultural artist and master drummer, Prince Adewale Laoye of Aafin Ilu (Palace of Drums).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Prince Laoye said the event, titled “Drum for Peace,” is a peace-driven initiative themed “Promoting Peace Through Drums, Not Guns/Bombs.”

According to him, the programme is designed to spread messages of peace and unity before, during, and after the governorship election.

The event is scheduled to take place on July 26, 2026, at Ede City Hall in Osun State and is expected to attract eminent personalities from various walks of life.

Laoye explained that the initiative will harness the power of culture and traditional drumming to promote peace, strengthen social cohesion, and encourage citizens to embrace harmony at all times.

The cultural fiesta will feature performances by singers, poets, traditional chanters, drummers, and other creative artists, with every presentation centred on a single message—peace.

He disclosed that about 500 drummers, alongside other performers, will showcase their artistic talents in support of the peace campaign.

“Through music, spoken word, chants, and cultural expressions, participants will advocate unity, tolerance, and communal harmony,” Laoye said.

He added that the event would also feature keynote addresses and peace messages from security agencies, representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), community leaders, and other stakeholders, all of whom will emphasise the importance of peaceful elections and social cohesion.

Through music, spoken word, chants, and cultural expressions, participants will advocate unity, tolerance, and communal harmony.

The gathering is expected to bring together traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, adults, and people from different tribes and ethnic communities residing in Osun State.

Emphasising the significance of the initiative, Laoye described culture as a powerful tool for social transformation and nation-building.

According to him, the Drum for Peace Movement seeks to remind citizens that communities thrive when dialogue replaces conflict and that lasting peace remains the foundation for sustainable progress and development.

He also encouraged individuals, organisations, and peace advocates interested in supporting or partnering with the initiative to join the movement.
