Presidency Celebrates Rescue of Oyo Schoolchildren After 56 Days in Captivity, Vows Justice for Slain Teacher

The Presidency has expressed relief and gratitude following the successful rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted from Oriire Community in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, ending a harrowing 56-day ordeal that gripped the nation and left families in anguish.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, praised the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force for securing the release of the victims through a coordinated security operation that also led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers and the neutralisation of several others.

The President described the rescue as a major victory against criminal elements and a moment of relief for the affected families and the country at large.

A 56-Day Nightmare

The abduction occurred nearly two months ago when armed kidnappers invaded a school environment in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, seizing pupils and their teachers before whisking them away into captivity.

The incident sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the safety of schools across Nigeria, particularly as attacks on educational institutions have become an increasing security challenge in recent years.

For 56 days, the children, their teachers, and their families endured uncertainty, fear, and emotional trauma as security agencies intensified efforts to track down the kidnappers and secure the victims’ freedom.

Throughout the period, authorities maintained that intelligence gathering and rescue operations were ongoing, while family members and concerned Nigerians anxiously awaited positive news.

Teacher Killed in Captivity

While the rescue operation eventually ended successfully for the surviving victims, tragedy struck during the period of captivity.

One of the teachers, identified as Mr. Oyedokun, was reportedly murdered by the abductors.

According to information referenced by the Presidency, the teacher was brutally killed while in captivity, a development that deepened public grief and underscored the brutality of the kidnappers.

Although security agencies have not publicly released full details of the circumstances surrounding his death, reports indicate that Mr. Oyedokun was separated from other captives and later killed by the terrorists during the prolonged standoff.

His death became a painful symbol of the human cost of the kidnapping crisis facing many communities across the country.

President Tinubu specifically referenced the slain teacher in his statement and pledged that justice would be pursued for him and his family.

“My government will get justice for these children and their teachers and for the family of Mr. Oyedokun, who the terrorists gruesomely murdered,” the President said.

The killing has drawn sympathy from educators, parents, and civil society groups, who described Mr. Oyedokun as a dedicated teacher whose life was cut short while in the line of duty.

President Tinubu commended the security forces for their persistence and professionalism throughout the rescue operation.

According to the Presidency, troops, intelligence operatives, and police personnel worked around the clock for nearly two months to ensure the victims were rescued safely and without collateral damage.

The operation reportedly combined military action, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and tactical interventions that eventually led security forces to the abductors’ hideouts.

The successful operation resulted not only in the release of the captives but also in the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers and the elimination of other members of the criminal group.

“I am profoundly happy that our security forces successfully rescued the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire, Ogbomoso, in Oyo State today after a military, police, and intelligence-driven operation that neutralised some of the terrorists that perpetrated the evil act and led to the arrest of eight of them,” the President stated.

He described the rescue as the end of a painful siege that had lasted more than 50 days.

Oyo Government Praised

The President also acknowledged the role played by the Oyo State Government throughout the rescue efforts.

He commended state authorities for their cooperation with federal security agencies and urged them to strengthen security measures around schools and learning institutions.

According to the Presidency, collaboration between federal and state authorities was instrumental in ensuring the success of the operation.

“I must commend the Government of Oyo State for working cooperatively with us in bringing this unfortunate incident to a successful end,” Tinubu said.

Recognising the physical and psychological trauma experienced by the rescued children and teachers, President Tinubu directed emergency management agencies to work closely with the Oyo State Government to provide immediate medical care, counselling, and other relief services.

The Presidency said every necessary assistance would be provided to aid the recovery and reintegration of the rescued victims.

Renewed Focus on School Security

The Oriire abduction has once again highlighted growing concerns about the vulnerability of schools to attacks by criminal groups.

Over the past decade, Nigeria has witnessed several high-profile kidnappings targeting schools, leading to calls for stronger security measures, improved intelligence gathering, and better protection of students and teachers.

For the families of the rescued children and teachers, Friday’s announcement brought an end to nearly two months of uncertainty and fear. Yet amid the celebrations, the memory of Mr. Oyedokun remains a painful reminder of the devastating human consequences of insecurity.
