Boko Haram Overruns Ngoshe, Kills Scores, Abducts Over 100, Vows to Hold Eid Salah in Blood-Soaked Town

‎Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters overran the remote community of Ngoshe in Gwoza Local Government Area, killing scores of civilians and soldiers, abducting more than 100 residents mostly women and children and leaving thousands displaced.

‎The attack unfolded shortly after residents broke their fast during the holy month of Ramadan, catching the community off guard.

‎Militants first targeted a military outpost belonging to the 82 Division Task Force Battalion, overwhelming the base with superior firepower, killing several soldiers, destroying equipment, seizing ammunition, and setting vehicles, structures ablaze, resulting in millions of naira in damages.

‎The insurgents then descended on the civilian population, slaughtering residents in targeted killings. Among the victims were the community’s Chief Imam, local elders, and other innocent people. Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of horror as homes burned and families were torn apart.

‎More than 100 residents mostly women and children.

‎Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, confirmed the grim details in interviews, stating that an unspecified number of civilians, soldiers, and even some insurgents died in the clashes.

‎He noted that over 100 people remain missing or abducted, while thousands predominantly women and children fled for safety and are now taking refuge in the nearby Pulka community, facing acute humanitarian challenges including food shortages and inadequate shelter.

‎In the footage, fighters boast of slaughtering residents, including children, asserting the killings were carried out in accordance with divine instructions.

‎They defiantly vow to perform the upcoming Eid Salah (Eid al-Fitr prayers marking the end of Ramadan) in the captured, “blood-soaked” town of Ngoshe (also referred to as Goshe), crediting their success to divine favor.

‎Such videos are a familiar Boko Haram tactic to spread terror, demoralize populations, assert control, and potentially aid recruitment by portraying themselves as enforcers of strict Islamic rule.

‎The incident highlights the persistent and evolving threat from Boko Haram and its splinter faction, ISWAP, despite sustained military efforts under Operation Hadin Kai.

‎The killings were carried out in accordance with divine instructions.

‎Gwoza, near the Cameroon border and close to militant strongholds like Sambisa Forest, remains a volatile hotspot due to its rugged terrain and strategic location.

‎The targeting of a religious leader like the Chief Imam during Ramadan, combined with the militants’ provocative vow to celebrate Eid in the devastated community, adds a deeply disturbing layer of sectarian provocation to the violence.

‎Senator Ndume condemned the attack, expressed condolences to grieving families, and reported that retreating insurgents were pursued, with many neutralized by air strikes from the Joint Task Force. However, the overrun base exposes ongoing vulnerabilities in securing remote outposts.

‎Nigerian military authorities have not yet released a comprehensive official statement on this specific raid, but the assault has intensified calls for stronger troop reinforcements, improved intelligence sharing, better-equipped forward bases, and greater community involvement in security.

‎The Ngoshe tragedy is the latest chapter in a 17-year insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced over two million people, and triggered a massive humanitarian crisis.

‎Security operations continue to locate and rescue abductees while efforts are underway to restore control and support displaced families.
