‎COREN Sets Up Committee to Review Engineers Act

‎The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has inaugurated a committee to review the Engineers Act (as Amended) 2018, in a move aimed at strengthening regulation and aligning the profession with global best practices.

‎The inaugural meeting of the committee took place on Tuesday, at COREN Headquarters in Abuja.
‎
‎In his remarks, COREN President, Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, stressed the importance of the assignment, describing it as “critical to strengthening engineering regulation, aligning with global best practices, and ensuring the profession remains responsive to emerging national and international realities.”

‎The committee is chaired by Engr. Kamila Maliki, with Ejikeme Mgbemena, serving as Deputy Chairman. Other members include Margaret Oguntala, Dominic Udoatan, Isyaka Lawan, Kam-selem Alhaji Bukar, Umar Maikunkele, Cyril Onyeneke, Prof. Okorie Uche, Dr. A. Amin; and Folorunsho Oladoyin.

‎The secretariat of the committee is led by Andrew Onyilo as Secretary, supported by Arowolo Precious as Assistant Secretary.
‎
‎According to its Terms of Reference, the committee will review the Engineers Act 2018 to identify strengths and gaps, engage stakeholders across engineering and allied sectors, benchmark findings against international standards, and recommend amendments.
‎
‎The review to be done within three months is expected to enhance COREN’s regulatory powers, improve disciplinary frameworks, strengthen institutional autonomy, and provide sustainable support for key programmes such as the Engineering Residency Programme (ERP).

‎The agency emphasised that the process demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the practice of engineering in Nigeria and ensuring its regulatory framework remains robust, forward-looking, and globally competitive.
