NNPCL Makes History: Dangote Refinery Begins Fuel Supply, Nigeria Inches Closer to Petroleum Self-Sufficiency

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has commenced loading of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest for self-sufficiency in petroleum production.

According to a statement released by NNPCL on Saturday, over 100 trucks were mobilized to the refinery’s fuel loading gantry in preparation for the scheduled petrol loading on Sunday, September 15, 2024. Hundreds more trucks are en route to the facility.

NNPCL has also requested permanent office space for its staff at the Dangote Refinery to enhance collaboration and facilitate seamless operations between the two entities.

In a related development, NNPCL clarified that petroleum pricing is determined by global market forces, contrary to claims by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). The company stated that the recent changes in PMS prices have no impact on the Dangote Refinery’s access to the Nigerian market.

The oil firm has also disclosed that it bought fuel at N898 per litre from Dangote Refinery, contrary to reports that it was purchased at N760 per litre. Chief Spokesperson of the NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, confirmed that “We successfully loaded PMS at the Dangote Refinery today. The claim that we purchased it at N760 per liter is incorrect. For this initial loading, the price from the refinery was N898 per liter.”

The commencement of PMS lifting at the Dangote Refinery is expected to boost Nigeria’s petroleum production, reduce import dependence, and stabilize the domestic market. With a capacity to produce 650,000 barrels per day, the Dangote Refinery is poised to significantly reduce the country’s reliance on imported petroleum products
