SERAP Demands Reinstatement of Senator Natasha, Gives Akpabio Ultimatum Over Court Ruling

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a stern ultimatum to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, demanding the immediate reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following a Federal High Court ruling on July 4, 2025, that nullified her six-month suspension.

SERAP insists that Akpabio must ensure Akpoti-Uduaghan’s smooth return to the Senate today or on a date of her choosing, with full restoration of her legislative rights, entitlements, and privileges.

The organization condemned the suspension as a “grave violation” of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) and international human rights treaties, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako, declared the suspension unconstitutional, citing its excessive nature and lack of legal backing under the Senate Standing Orders 2023 and the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act.

The court ruled that the penalty violated Akpoti-Uduaghan’s right to represent Kogi Central and her constituents’ right to political participation. SERAP emphasized that the Senate’s failure to comply undermines the rule of law and Nigeria’s legal system.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension stemmed from her allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio and claims of a conspiracy to “eliminate” her, which the Senate dismissed as disruptive behavior.

SERAP’s statement, posted on X, called on the Senate to set an example by upholding court orders and protecting democratic integrity.

Failure to reinstate Akpoti-Uduaghan, SERAP warned, could lead to further legal action, following its earlier suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/498/2025) filed in March 2025. The organization urged Akpabio to act swiftly to avoid escalating tensions and ensure justice for Akpoti-Uduaghan and her constituents.
