‎Nigerian Geospatial Expert, Adesiyan harnesses GIS, machine learning to solve global challenges

‎From mapping storm surge hazard zones in Baltimore to predicting the distribution of endangered species in California, Nigerian-born geospatial expert Yetunde Adesiyan is harnessing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and machine learning to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

‎With more than 15 years of professional experience in business strategy, oil services, and banking, Adesiyan has successfully transitioned into geospatial science, where she applies advanced technology to drive solutions in conservation, energy, and urban development.

‎Armed with a master’s degree in GIS and Cartography from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, she has pioneered the use of spatial analysis and machine learning to reveal patterns that improve decision-making. One of her groundbreaking studies used species distribution modeling to forecast habitats of an endangered fox species in California, offering new insights for conservation and resource management.

‎Her expertise also extends to large-scale infrastructure and energy projects. She has conducted site suitability analyses for offshore wind farms in BOEM-designated lease areas of the United States, identified High Consequence Areas (HCAs) around Texas pipeline infrastructure, and deployed urban change detection tools using ERDAS Imagine and ArcGIS Pro. These projects underscore her ability to apply geospatial intelligence to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

‎Beyond fieldwork, Adesiyan has contributed to academic research, co-authoring two peer-reviewed articles on renewable energy, including an in-depth review of switchgrass as a bioenergy feedstock. This blend of scholarship and practice has positioned her as both a thought leader and practitioner in geospatial science.

‎Her earlier career in business strategy and development management sharpened her leadership skills, equipping her to lead cross-functional teams and integrate geospatial technologies into long-term planning. She continues to advocate for data-driven approaches that help organizations remain competitive and future-focused.

‎Today, Adesiyan is recognized for leveraging GIS, analytics, and machine learning to shape smarter solutions to environmental, industrial, and urban challenges—highlighting the growing importance of geospatial intelligence in solving the complex problems of a rapidly changing world.
