Resident Doctors Begin Nationwide Warning Strike Over Abduction of Colleagues

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has embarked on a one-week total nationwide warning strike, starting from midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024.

This decision was made during an extraordinary national executive council (ENEC) meeting held virtually on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

The strike is in response to the continued detention of Dr. Ganiyat Poopola, a member of the association, who was abducted on December 27, 2023, in Kaduna State. Despite efforts by security agencies and the government, Dr. Poopola and another captive, Folarin, remain in the custody of the kidnappers.

NARD has accused the government of failing to provide adequate security for its members, leading to the abduction of over 10 resident doctors in recent weeks. The association is demanding immediate action to secure the release of the abducted doctors, provide adequate security for healthcare workers, and address the growing concern of insecurity in the country.

Strike will be escalated if the government fails to meet its demands.

The warning strike will see resident doctors withdraw their services from public hospitals across the country, except in emergency cases. NARD has warned that the strike will be escalated if the government fails to meet its demands.

The strike has already started to impact healthcare services in public hospitals, with many patients being turned away due to the lack of doctors. The government has yet to respond to the strike, but NARD has vowed to continue the action until its demands are met.
