Nigeria’s Super Eagles Set to Stampede Mozambique, Cruise Past in AFCON 2025 Round of 16

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, one of the standout performers in the group stage, are gearing up for a Round of 16 showdown against Mozambique on January 5 at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

Nigeria topped Group C with a perfect record—three wins from three matches, scoring the tournament’s highest tally of eight goals while showcasing attacking flair and resilience.

Their sole AFCON meeting came in the 2010 group stage in Angola, where the Super Eagles delivered a convincing 3-0 victory, with Peter Odemwingie scoring twice and Obafemi Martins adding one.

Nigeria’s flawless group-stage campaign—wins over Tanzania (2-1), Tunisia (3-2), and Uganda (3-1)—highlighted their potent attack and depth strengths which includes; Lethal attacking talent led by Victor Osimhen (Napoli striker and recent African Footballer of the Year contender) and Ademola Lookman (Atalanta winger, another recent award winner), supported by Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, and Raphael Onyedika. The team scored eight goals, the most in the group stage, with Lookman and Onyedika each netting twice.

Midfield energy and balance: Frank Onyeka’s introduction provided aggression and transition control, allowing creative players like Iwobi to thrive. This dynamic setup overwhelmed opponents in central areas.

Mozambique has never beaten Nigeria in competitive fixtures.

Momentum and experience: As 2023 finalists, Nigeria have quickly recovered from World Cup qualification disappointment. Their perfect record matches only Algeria’s, underscoring their dominance and knockout pedigree.

Mozambique, while resilient in securing their first knockout berth with a 3-2 win over Gabon, have shown vulnerability defensively and lack Nigeria’s firepower. Their historic progress is commendable, but Nigeria’s superior quality, historical edge, and current form position the Super Eagles for a comfortable advancement.

The winner advances to the quarter-finals, potentially facing Egypt or Benin. Kickoff is at 8:00 PM local time (7:00 PM GMT) on January 5. Nigerian fans are optimistic: this could be the start of a deep run toward glory.
