Stephanie O. Adams-Douglas

Dubawa, a West African fact-checking and verification platform, has announced its fourth annual fact-checking fellowship.

Dubawa is a fact-checking and verification platform founded in 2018 by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, which launched its fact-checking fellowship named after Ghaninan Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication Kwame KariKari.

The successful candidates were chosen from various newsrooms in print, broadcast, and digital media in Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Liberia. These fellows are expected to go through a rigorous orientation training on fact-checking methodologies in order to be fully equipped to combat fake news in the West African sub region where they operate.

Candidates will be taught the fundamentals of media information literacy, open data, research, investigations, holistic digital security, and accountability journalism.

All shortlisted candidates will be tutored by leading media and fact checking experts during a four-day orientation workshop, assigned individual mentors throughout the three-month fact checking fellowship, and will be conferred a fact checker upon successful completion.

As part of the induction program, fellows will go through four days of rigorous training to fully equip them on the methodologies and dynamics of fact checking before the program begins in January 2023 and runs through March 2023.

The Kwame Kari Kari fellowship is supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED)
